More Information
The word shen is often translated as "spirit", and disturbed shen implies that the spirit is agitated, especially as it affects the mind and the nervous system. Treatment of disturbed shen uses herbs that nourish heart blood and yin, or subdue heart yang. Disturbed shen can be due to excess factors such as heat, rising yang, or stagnation of blood or phlegm; or deficiency factors of blood, qi or yin. Heat can be involved in both excess and deficiency, causing agitation to the heart qi.
