Tonic formulas are used to overcome/replenish specific deficiencies. They support the body's efforts at regulating the various system functions. They are best known for helping to strengthen and build immunity so we are less susceptible to illness. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, there are 5 categories: tonify the Blood, tonify the Qi, tonify both Qi and Blood, Tonify the Yin, Warm and Tonify the Yang. Most tonics are safe to be taken over a long period of time. However, it should be noted that more is not better- i.e. it is not good to take a larger dose for a shorter period of time. Also, tonics should be discontinued during any acute illness (such as colds and flu).
